It is a great time to be a lover of penguins. 20 years after the release of The March of the Penguins, there is a new docuseries, The Secrets of Penguins, that can be seen on Disney+. There are also lots of other opportunities to see penguins as well, some of which are in person!
While April is Earth Month, this is something that is celebrated daily by National Geographic Expeditions. With its trips, National Geographic Expeditions is committed “to providing inquisitive travelers with unforgettable travel experiences around the world that also help support efforts to protect our planet.”
There are specially curated itineraries that allow guests to learn about and connect with the fascinating world around them while also being immersed in the beauty of nature. On top of that, every trip that is booked also helps support the global nonprofit National Geographic Society and its work to protect and illuminate our world with exploration, research, and education.
A trip with National Geographic Expeditions gives guests to see the wonder of every continent. This ranges from the coldest regions of the Earth to the equatorial paradises. This also gives some opportunities to spot some adorable winged friends like Penguins!
Penguins, along with being some of the most beloved animals in the world, also happen to be your humble Disney correspondent’s favorite animal! Since childhood, Penguins have been a favorite fascination. As Earth Month comes to a close, National Geographic has shared some of the best ways to see penguins. Check them out below!
Stream “Secrets of the Penguins” on Disney+ and Hulu
Witness penguin behaviors never before caught on film in this three-part series streaming now on Disney+ and Hulu.
Led by National Geographic Explorer and Emmy and BAFTA Award-Winning Filmmaker Bertie Gregory and a team of more than 70 world-class scientists and filmmakers, this series showcases the most intimate, courageous and charming moments of penguins braving some of the most extreme environments on Earth – from the rocky beaches of Cape Town to the Antarctic continent to the tropical beaches of the Galápagos.
And the best part is – while the penguins will be wearing their permanent tuxedos – you don’t even have to leave your living room to catch the action!
Chill Out with Chinstrap Chums in Person
For those who want to see penguins in person, journey on the “Voyage to Antarctica” itinerary with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions and explore the Antarctic peninsula that many penguin species call home, including Adélie, Gentoo and Chinstrap penguins. You may also choose the Antarctica Direct: Fly the Drake Passage as an option for a shorter overall itinerary.

Penguins by Land
Southern Africa is a prime destination for seeing some of the world’s most iconic species. But did you know that also includes penguins?
While exploring the Cape Peninsula on the Southern Africa: Living History and Legendary Species with National Geographic Expeditions, your group will visit the Boulders Penguin Colony. Once home to only two breeding pairs of endangered African penguins, the colony has grown to more than 2,200in recent years due to recovery and rehabilitation efforts protecting Boulders Beach. See their nesting burrows and watch the colony in action as you learn more about these resilient and fascinating animals from your Expedition Leader!
Get Goin’ to the Galápagos
Did you know penguins live on the equator, too?
If you prefer to see – and potentially swim with – penguins in a warmer climate, check out the Exploring Galápagos itinerary with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions!
During your 10-day expedition cruise exploring this beautiful archipelago, you’ll have the opportunity to kayak, paddleboard, snorkel and join naturalists on interpretive island walks as you learn about Galápagos wildlife, including the Galápagos penguin – one of the smallest penguins in the world and the only species to live north of the equator and in the Galápagos.
These experts will help you connect with the unique and fascinating Galápagos wildlife, including the Galápagos penguin – one of the smallest penguins in the world and the only species to live north of the equator and in the Galápagos. These naturalists are typically “Galapagueños” who are native to the area and intimately knowledgeable and passionate about the islands and their ecosystem.
