Tiana - Disney+ Series

‘The Princess and the Frog’ Disney+ Series Canceled

A Disney+ series based on The Princess and the Frog is no longer happening. The Walt Disney Animation Studios shelved Tiana as the series didn’t come together in a way Disney wanted. This came despite the best efforts of Disney which included mixing up the creative team and other changes. The Hollywood Reporter broke this news.

The cancellation of this series will lead to some layoffs at Disney’s Vancouver animation studio. Disney also canceled an unannounced animated feature that was set to go straight to Disney+. Tiana was first announced in 2020 and would have seen Disney Legend Anika Noni Rose return to voice Princess Tiana. This is a role she originated in the 2009 animated film that introduced Disney’s first Black princess.

The cancelation of this series does not mean that Disney is done with Princess Tiana, however. There is a short-form special in the works from Walt Disney Animation studios that focuses on the character. It is early in development. Joyce Sherri is attached as the director and writer with Steve Anderson also directing. It is expected to feature new storytelling based on the 2009 animated film. Disney also opened Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts in 2024. This attraction tells a new chapter in the story of Princess Tiana following the events of The Princess and the Frog.

The cancelation of Tiana reinforces Disney’s commitment to quality over quantity. This was a principle that was brought back in after Bob Iger returned to the role of CEO following Bob Chapek’s ouster. Since then, there have been production cancelations and changes for both live-action and animated movies in the company’s different studios and brands.
