Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927 and Universal Pictures distributed the shorts. He starred in many shorts between 1927 and 1938. However, after Disney lost control of the character Mickey Mouse was created in 1928. As for Oswald, he eventually fell into obscurity at Universal Pictures. That is until Bob Iger traded Al Michaels for the trademark of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and he returned to Disney in 2006. Since then, Oswald has appeared in some video games, some shorts, and even in Disney Parks. In 2022, Disney created an original short with him. His next role, however, could have him starring in his own series.
Deadline is reporting that Jon Favreau is working on creating a series based around Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The new series would use both live-action and photorealistic animation, both of which Favreau has plenty of experience with, to bring the character and the world around him to life. At this point, Favreau is set to write and produce the project. It is unknown who will direct. Casting and plot details are also unknown.
Jon Favreau has a long history with Disney that has him working in many different parts of the company. He directed Iron Man for Marvel Studios and has also worked on multiple other projects there. He also directed the photorealistic animated live-action version of The Lion King. Most recently, he has been working on Star Wars, most prominently on The Mandalorian.
