The newest film to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe may not have the greatest ratings. However, it is having a super weekend at the box office. Over the course of the Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day weekend, the film has already garnered $88.4 million for its first three days. It is expected to surpass $100 million domestically by the end of the weekend, putting it ahead of expectations.
Globally, the film is also showing some strength as well. It started with $92.4 million and is set to earn $192.4 million over the course of the weekend.
The success of this movie comes as it earned a B- from audiences on CinemaScore. This makes it the worst grade that any film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever received. However, it also is the top domestic opening of 2025 and also has one of the strongest domestic openings for the holiday weekend.
While the CinemaScore grade has been highlighted a lot, it doesn’t represent the sentiment of all fans of the film. Rotten Tomatoes has the film at 79 percent audience rating.
Captain America: Brave New World stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America. He is joined by Harrison Ford as the new elected President of the United States Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. President Ross wants to bring Captain America in the the government as an official military position. However, before this can happen and Wilson can decide if this is something that should be done, he discovers a global plot that has him facing off with Ross when he becomes the Red Hulk. The film also stars Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon with Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Rosa Salazar.
The success on the opening weekend of this film is a good thing for Marvel, which had seemed to have lost its footing in recent years. This seemed to have pivoted with last summers Deadpool & Wolverine. Captain America: Brave New World has been described as a “relatively grounded action film” much like Captain America: The Winter Soldier by Marvel chief Kevin Feige.
