Mufasa: The Lion King

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Set to Surpass ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’

Mufasa: The Lion King was beaten on its opening weekend by Sonic the Hedgehog 3. As the holidays have continued and now passed, Mufasa has continued to gain steam and show it has some staying power. This has led BoxOfficeReport.com to predict that the film will surpass Sonic 3 at the box office this weekend.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been on top at the domestic box office since it was released with $160.5 million. This weekend it is projected to earn an additional $22.5 million. Currently, Mufasa: The Lion King has earned $138.5 million at the domestic box office. Globally, Sonic 3 has earned $279 million. Globally, Mufasa is already ahead and has earned $365 million.

“With Mufasa having displayed better holding power than Sonic 3 thus far, chances are good that [it] will come out ahead for first place this weekend,” Daniel Garris, with BoxOfficeReport, shared.

Mufasa: The Lion King tells the backstory of Mufasa and Scar. On its opening weekend, it came in second place at $25 million behind Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Since then, the film has gained strength at the box office. It hasn’t shown the same power that 2019’s The Lion King held at the box office, however. The original earned $1.6 billion during its theatrical run.
