Deadpool & Wolverine is now the highest grossing Rated-R film of all time. The Ryan Reynold and Hugh Jackman film has brought in $1.086 billion over just 23 days. This makes it the highest grossing R-Rated film of all time globally.
With the film’s success and also the success of Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2, Disney now has two $1 billion films this year. It also means that it has two back-to-back $1 billion films. This is the first time that any studio has done this in a given year.
The Marvel film is now the 31st film from The Walt Disney Studios (including 3 Fox films before it was acquired) and the 11th title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reach this milestone. This includes 2 MCU films from Sony. Disney now has over half of the 55 films to ever gross $1 billion at the box office. Marvel Studios is responsible for the second most $1 billion films of any studios. The only one ahead of Marvel Studios is The Walt Disney Studios.
Deadpool & Wolverine started off strong and opened with $444 million globally in July. This made it the highest-grossing global opening for a Rated-R film ever. Perviously, Deadpool held this distinction. It also helped Marvel Studios surpass $30 billion at the global box office.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said that the secret to integrating Deadpool into the larger MCU successfully is to “let Deadpool be Deadpool.”
“People thought when Disney bought Marvel, ‘They’re going to shave off the hard edges. They’re going to make it all G-rated,’” Feige said. “Of course, that was never the intention.”
Movie theaters aren’t the only place where Deadpool (and Wolverine) are proving to be popular with fans. Deadpool recently appeared at Avengers Campus at the Disneyland Resort with Wolverine. He also showed up at Disneyland Paris.
On top of that, Deadpool made an appearance recently at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. He appeared in Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase. He pitched ideas to Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro and then appeared as part of a musical number.
