Angels in the Outfield

‘Angels in the Outfield’ Heading to Disney+ as it Celebrates 30th Anniversary

It’s hard to believe it but Angels in the Outfield was released into theaters 30 years ago. Soon, the movie will be found on Disney+!

In 1994, the William Dear directed film was released into theaters. The movie centers on Roger Bomman (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a young foster child living in California. Roger’s father, who has abandoned him, sarcastically tells Roger that they will be a family again “when the Angels win the pennant.” Taking this to heart, Roger prays for the California Angels, a struggling baseball team, to start winning. In response to Roger’s prayers, a group of real angels, led by Al (played by Christopher Lloyd), begins to invisibly assist the team during games. Roger and his friend J.P. (played by Milton Davis Jr.) are the only ones who can see these celestial beings. Roger tells the Angels’ manager, George Knox (played by Danny Glover), about the divine intervention. Though skeptical at first, Knox starts to believe Roger as the team’s performance improves remarkably.

Disney+ is Disney’s streaming service. For many, the question has frequently been asked, “why isn’t Angels in the Outfield on Disney+?” This summer the answer will be “it is.” This baseball flick will be arriving on the streaming service on July 15, 2024. It is just one of many new titles coming to the streamer as a part of the Hulu on Disney+ summer slate.

Angels in the Outfield, although not a blockbuster, was well received when it initially came to theaters. It is a family friendly movie that appealed to a wide range of movie-goers. As the years have gone by, it has become a nostalgic favorite. It also had two relatively unknown actors who would become big stars someday in it. They were Matthew McConaughey and Adrien Brody.
