Disneyland Resort Honors 101-Year-Old Medal of Honor Recipient

Recently, the Disneyland Resort honored a 101-year-old Medal of Honor recipient. Retired U.S. Navy Captain E. Royce Williams was welcomed to The Happiest Place on Earth and honored for his extraordinary service and courage. Williams is the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient from the Korean War. This continues an ongoing tradition of Disney honoring and showing gratitude to U.S. service members, veterans, and their families.

Captain Williams joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 as a naval aviator. He went on to serve in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. On November 18, 1952, during the Korean War, as he was flying from the USS Oriskany, seven Soviet MiG-15 fighter jets appeared. This led to what would become the longest dogfight in U.S. military history. This mission also remained classified for over 50 years. Throughout his career, Captain Williams flew over 200 combat missions. He received the Medal of Honor, Silver Star, and Navy Cross for his valor, devotion to duty, and extraordinary service in the skies.

“You know you’re at war and your number one job is not protecting yourself it’s accomplishing a mission,” said Medal of Honor recipient and retired U.S. Navy Captain E. Royce Williams.

Captain Williams, his close friends, and fellow retired military aviators were welcomed to the Disneyland Resort by cast members for a day full of Disney magic. During a special moment at Sleeping Beauty Castle, Captain Williams was named an Honorary Citizen of Disneyland. This rare and distinguished honor was bestowed on him by Disneyland Ambassador Michele Mary.

The honor of being named an official Citizen of Disneyland was especially meaningful for Captain Williams. He shared that during World War II, Walt Disney was his hero because of the efforts he showcased in his animation and artwork supporting the troops.

Later in the afternoon, guests gathered around the flagpole in Town Square on Main Street, U.S.A. for a special Flag Retreat ceremony to honor Royce. This tradition dates back to the park’s earlier days. It serves as a daily tribute to service, sacrifice, and patriotism. For this specific day, the ceremony had even greater significance as Disney cast members, the Disneyland Band, and the Dapper Dans joined together to recognize Royce’s extraordinary legacy and lifetime of service to the nation. Disney shared that “Through music, ceremony, and heartfelt appreciation, Disneyland paid tribute to an American hero whose courage, devotion, and sacrifice continue to inspire generations.”

“This year has been very special for Royce; he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in February, and today Disney is honoring him during the Flag Retreat Ceremony,” said fellow retired U.S. Navy Capt. Paul Tanaka, a friend of Royce Williams. “Disney has shown their profound respect and commitment towards honoring service members, and I’m grateful they have chosen to honor Royce today. I know this is a special moment he will forever cherish.”

Following the Flag Retreat, Captain Williams was taken on Soarin’ Across America at Disney California Adventure. Since the original version of the attraction debuted in 2001, the queue has paid tribute to California and the Golden State’s rich aviation history. For Captain Williams, the experience gave an opportunity for meaningful reflection on the legacy of American aviation while also enjoying a touch of Disney magic.

The Walt Disney Company has a tradition of honoring military service for over a century. This began with founders Walt and Roy O. Disney’s service during the First World War. A century later, that commitment continues to be demonstrated in many ways. One of them is through the daily Flag Retreat ceremonies at Disneyland. There are also special ticket offers for service members and eligible veterans. Disney’s Heroes Work Here initiative hires, trains, and supports U.S. military veterans, reservists, and military spouses.

There are special-priced promotional theme park tickets for active and retired U.S. Military members and their spouses available throughout 2026. These offers are valid through a U.S. Military base ticket office. Eligible service members/veterans can also purchase them via GOVX.com with a valid Military ID.
