The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is one of the more popular series of movies from The Walt Disney Company. However, there hasn’t been a new movie in the franchise since 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales. This doesn’t mean that there haven’t been any efforts made for a new film, though. In fact, work continues to make the sixth film in the franchise.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, series producer Jerry Bruckheimer was asked about the future of two his most popular franchises, Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean and what would return first.”It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know,” Bruckheimer explained, referring to which may return to the big screen first. “You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know because, with Top Gun, you have [Tom Cruise] who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”
While there isn’t a ton of information shared in this answer, it does confirm that Pirates of the Caribbean is getting a reboot. It also appears that this means that actors who have previously appeared in the films won’t be returning. Recent reports suggest that Ayo Edebiri is being looked at to lead a female-led Pirates of the Caribbean film. If this were to happen, she would be cast as a pirate named Anne who is seeking out hidden treasure. Edebiri has appeared in The Bear as Sydney Adamu. For this role she earned an Emmy. Her voice has also been lent to characters in multiple projects as well, including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
A new Pirates of the Caribbean movie has been quite the process for Disney. There have been efforts to make this next film for quite some time. These have been complicated by the legal troubles Johnny Depp has had with his ex-wife Amber Heard. In 2018, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick taking a stab at its script. In 2020, Disney was planning on bringing Margo Robbie to the series for a spinoff. Two years later Bruckheimer shared that there were currently two Pirates scripts in the works. One of these included Margo Robbie and the other didn’t. Last September, Craig Mazin (The Last of Us showrunner) shared that he was working on a film for the franchise. “We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did!” Mazin explained. “And then he [Ted Elliot] wrote a fantastic script, and the strike happened, and everyone’s waiting around.” Ted Elliot wrote the scripts to the first four Pirates films with writing partner Terry Rossio.
At this point, a timeline for the next film in the Pirates franchise is completely unknown. In fact, there is more unknown than known for the film. It seems that really the only thing that is currently known is that it will be a reboot. It is possible that this reboot is coming from Craig Mazin. It is unlikely that Johnny Depp and other cast members from the previous films will be returning to be in the next film. Disney has not made any announcements on this film but with D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event coming to Anaheim this summer, there is the possibility that news could be shared.
