A movie based on the Society of Explorers and Adventures is in the works. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news saying that Ryan Reynolds and Qui Nguyen are working on the project for Disney. This movie would be apart from the Disney+ series that Ron Moore is working on. Nguyen is set to pen the film and Reynolds will produce it.
The Society of Explorers and Adventures (SEA) is a popular fictional organization that sits as the backstory for multiple Disney park attractions around the globe. Originally it appeared as a part of Tokyo DisneySea’s Fortress Explorations in 2001. Later it would become a part of the story in Hong Kong Disneyland’s Mystic Manor. It also has appeared in other attractions in Disney parks around the globe. Sometimes this is just a nod through logo or insignia, other times it is other messaging that Disney geeks would recognize. Recently, a panel focusing on SEA was presented at D23 Expo 2022. It also was referenced in The Jungle Cruise movie with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.
Disney hopes that this movie based on SEA will launch a new franchise. If it ends up being released, the film will be an adventure that brings together the lore behind multiple Disney attractions with a modern twist. It will be a new take on the SEA mythology and have some different approaches in the present day by adding a new supernatural element to its history and also following some new characters that weren’t originally in the backstory.
Currently, Nguyen is the screenwriter for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ upcoming film Strange World. He also co-directed the film with Disney veteran Don Hall. Ryan Reynolds is gearing up to shoot Deadpool 3 with Hugh Jackman. Shawn Levy will be directing this film.
