South Korean Pop Group BTS Headed to Disney+

The South Korean pop group BTS is headed to Disney+. Disney shared the news with CNN Business today that the band will be headed exclusively to Disney’s streaming service. This is a huge deal for Disney as it continues to add more talent and titles to Disney+.

Disney and HYBE, BTS’ management company, will be bringing five new titles to Disney+. Previously, the management company was known as Big Hit Entertainment. According to CNN, at least two of these titles will be shot with the entire band. This will include a taped concert and also a documentary series that gives a behind-the-scenes look at the band. The docuseries is expected to debut next year. A recorded video message shared with CNN said that the band is looking forward to sharing “a more up-close and personal side of us.”

BTS has seen enormous global growth and popularity in recent years. Followed by fans, also known by it “Army,” Disney undoubtedly hopes that the band will attract new subscribers to Disney+.

The arrival of BTS on Disney+ comes after the band announced that it was taking a break as a group so that they could explore other projects, including solo work. The partnership with Disney does acknowledge this as one of the offerings is a series  V, a BTS star, who will go on vacation with other celebrities. The next chapter of the band will also be explored in the docuseries. Disney and HYBE said in a statement that the docuseries will follow the band “as they prepare for their second chapter.”

The exact terms of this deal have not been revealed at this time. It is a part of Disney’s major expansion into Asia with over 50 original titles said to be greenlit in the region by 2023.

“This collaboration represents our creative ambition — to work with iconic content creators and top stars in Asia-Pacific so their talent can be enjoyed by mainstream audiences in multiple ways,” Jessica Kam-Engle, Disney’s head of content for Asia Pacific, said in a statement. “We believe these new titles will captivate consumers worldwide and look forward to introducing more music content on our service.”

The partnership between Disney and BTS comes shortly after Disney announced that Disney+ has reached 137.7 million as of May 2022. This was more than was expected from the announcement.
