Today it was announced the Disney-Pixar’s upcoming animated feature, Soul will be moving from its November 20, 2020, theatrical release date to December 25th where it will be released exclusively on Disney+.
“We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving ‘Soul’ with audiences direct to Disney+ in December,” said Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.”
Pete Docter, the Academy Award-winning director behind Pixar’s Inside Out brought Soul to life. The movie features the voice talents of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Ahmir Questlove Thompson, Angela Bassett and Daveed Diggs. It also will have original jazz music created by globally renowned musician Jon Batiste and a score written by Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
“The world can be an exhausting and frustrating place – but it’s also full of unexpected joys, even in seemingly mundane things,” said Docter, director of “Soul” and Chief Creative Officer of Pixar Animation Studios. “ ‘Soul’ investigates what’s really important in our lives, a question we’re all asking these days. I hope it will bring some humor and fun to people at a time when everyone can surely use that.”
The arrival of Soul on Disney+ comes after it first was moved from its original theatrical release date in June with the hopes of it arriving in theaters on November 20th. However, with the continued impact that COVID-19 is having on theaters, Disney has decided that it is a better move to release the film on Disney+ and it’s 60 million subscribers. In international markets where Disney+ isn’t available currently or expected to be anytime soon, Soul will be released theatrically. Dates for this will be announced at a future date.
