Anaheim Mayor Voices Disappointment in California Theme Park Reopening Guidelines

The mayor of Anaheim has responded to the guidelines released today by the State of California regarding the reopening of theme parks. This comes after parks closed in March due to coronavirus. In his statement released on Twitter, Mayor Harry Sighu voiced great disappointment saying that “Disney and the city of Anaheim will survive. But too many Anaheim hotels, stores and restaurants will not survive another year of this.” He also urged for reopening of theme parks, in particular, the Disneyland Resort in Tier 3 and not Tier 4 which he argues would “wipe out jobs in our city and destroy lives.”

The mayor’s response echos a response to the guidelines released by Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock today as well. He strongly rejected the notion that the Disneyland Resort could not reopen safely. He argued that Disney has successfully and safely reopened theme parks around the globe and Anaheim should be no different. At this point, it isn’t known what will come next in this stalemate between the state and theme parks, in particular Disney and the city of Anaheim.
