The Walt Disney Studios Box Office Receipts Clear $7 Billion for 2018

The Walt Disney Studios has surpassed $7 billion in global box office receipts. This is only the second time in history a studio has passed the $7 billion mark in a year. The first was also Walt Disney Studios in 2016 when it hit $7.6 billion.

Disney is estimated to have generated an estimated $4.069 billion through December 9th. This makes it the second biggest year for the Walt Disney Company and third in the history of the industry. Domestically, Disney has pulled in an estimated  $2.948 billion as of December 9th. It is thought that with the opening of Mary Poppins Returns on December 19th, the domestic numbers will pass Disney’s $3 billion record set in 2016.

Disney currently has four of the top eight global releases for 2018.  Avengers: Infinity War is the top global film if the year with box office receipts passing $2 billion! It garnered the second position domestically. Black Panther came in second globally at $1.35 billion and first domestically, making the top two films of the year both from Marvel Studios. This year Pixar became the biggest animated domestic release in history when it reached $608.6 million and the number two animated film of all time with $1.24 billion.

The Disney Studios also had other top films this year including Ant-Man and The WaspSolo: A Star Wars Story and Christopher Robin. On the animated front, Ralph Breaks the Internet, by Walt Disney Animation Studios, has been in the first slot domestically for three weeks and has pulled in nearly $260 million to date.
