Millennium Falcon Attraction Rendering

New Tech Being Developed for Millennium Falcon Attraction in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be opening at Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios sometime next year. When it does, there won’t just be new experiences arriving, but also some incredible new technology. This new tech is being developed just for some of these new attractions. For the Millennium Falcon attraction, some of the tech that will bring it to life is now known.

On the NVIDIA blog, it was shared that an “in-progress animated sequence” was revealed that showed what it would be like to ride aboard the Millennium Falcon next year. The attraction promises to offer both “incredible detail and immersion.” The announcement also confirmed some details about the attraction.

A Powerful Cockpit for the Millennium Falcon

As has been assumed and speculated, guests will be riding in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon. In the blog, it is explained that “riders will enter a cockpit.” It then goes on to explain just how much computing power is going into the recreation of the Millennium Falcon. It will be powered by a BOXX chassis packed with eight high-end NVIDIA Quadro P6000 GPUs, connected via Quadro SLI.” Five projectors will be synchronized by Quadro Sync that work together to create ultra-high resolution displays that are perfectly timed. This promises to “fully immerse” riders in the world of Planet Batuu.

Collaboration

This whole process has been a major collaboration. Imagineering teamed up with NVIDIA and Epic Games with the goal of creating a multi-GPU implementation for Unreal Engine. This is an entirely new code. It was returned to the Epic Games team and will be used to help influence how the multi-GPUs function for their engine.

“We worked with NVIDIA engineers to use Quadro-specific features like Mosaic and cross-GPU reads to develop a renderer that had performance characteristics we needed,” says Bei Yang, technology studio executive at Disney Imagineering. “Using the eight connected GPUs allowed us to achieve performance unlike anything before.”

Both the demonstration and reveal of the details for the Millennium Falcon attraction were made during a presentation entitled “Walt Disney Imagineering Technology Preview: Real-time Rendering of a Galaxy Far, Far Away,” at the GPU Technology Conference in the Silicon Valley.
