On this day in 1981, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ was released by Lucasfilm. The first ‘Indiana Jones’ film in the crowd favorite franchise, ‘Raiders,’ introduced Harrison Ford as the adventurous and heroic archaeology professor. This first installment saw Indy fighting off the Nazis to gain control of the Ark of the Covenant. It would win five Academy Awards and become the highest-grossing film of 1981. ‘Raiders’ is considered one of the greatest films of all time, even being preserved in the National Film Registry.
