VIDEO: ‘Exploring Nature in Piston Peak’ From D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event

The Imagineering Horizons Pavilion at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event featured great panels that offered a look at a variety of projects and departments within Walt Disney Imagineering. After Horizons: A Carousel of Progress, a panel called Exploring Nature in Piston Peak followed. This was hosted by Imagineers Jason Grandt and Chelsea Whikehart. This panel looked into how Disney is trying to naturally weave this new area inspired by the world of Cars in the Magic Kingdom. The two Imagineers also shared how they drew aesthetic inspiration from classic Disney animated shorts, including Humphrey the Bear and Donald Duck cartoons, as well as global park environments like Camp Woodchuck at Tokyo Disneyland.

Daps Magic was on hand for this panel that gives a look at this future part of Magic Kingdom. Take a look at the video below:

Here are the highlights of this panel:

Land Design & Frontierland Integration

  • National Park Setting: The land is designed as a national park inspired by Rocky Mountain National Park, Yosemite, and Yellowstone, creating a seamless geographic transition across the United States from Liberty Square (New York) to Frontierland (Big Thunder Mountain/Arizona).
  • Natural Rockwork Transitions: The terrain uses gray granite rocks near Liberty Square and the Haunted Mansion, transitioning into red rock formations closer to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
  • Disney Short & Global Park Inspiration: Design choices, staging, and color palettes were inspired by classic Disney shorts (featuring Humphrey the Bear, Donald Duck, and Chip ‘n’ Dale) as well as global park areas like Camp Woodchuck (Tokyo Disneyland).
  • “Carified” Architecture: Structures are built to car scale, featuring double-wide doorways, lowered window sills, rusted national park lodge architecture, and vehicle-adapted nature elements like tire-shaped rainbow pools.

Attraction Updates & Ride Details

  • Cars Ridge Run Rally (Family Thrill Ride):
    • Features an off-road rally race across varied terrain, including a climb up snowy mountain peaks, camelback pump drops, and an active geyser field.
    • Kinetic effects include tire-tread geyser eruptions alongside the track.
    • Designed specifically to handle outdoor weather and continue operating during rain.
  • Miss Critter’s Daredevil Spin Along (Family Fun Ride):
    • Utilizes a turntable mechanism (resembling a teacup-style movement) with figure-eight handoffs between rotating platforms.
    • Ride vehicles seat up to four adult guests comfortably.

New Characters & World-Building

  • Ranger J. Audubon: Announced as a full-size animatronic character coming to the queue for Cars Ridge Run Rally.
  • Vehicle Wildlife: Introduces original “carified” animals, including playful, mischievous goat-cars that cause trouble around the track, as well as frog-cars.

Status & Production

  • Construction is actively underway in Orlando, Florida, with testing already conducted using maximal mockup ride vehicles to balance family-friendly thrill levels.
  • A detailed 3D scale model crafted by the Florida model shop was showcased at the event.
