There are some incredible limited-edition Disney dolls. These recreate some iconic characters from the realm of Disney. One of these is Redd from Pirates of the Caribbean. This classic character has been recreated in the form of a very limited-edition Disney doll that will have only 3,000 dolls sold. This doll will first go on sale from August 14-16 at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Starting on August 17th at 8:00 AM PST, it will be available on DisneyStore.com, while supplies last.

Who is Redd in Pirates of the Caribbean?

This is now the second doll we are highlighting here on Disney Parks Blog that is directly inspired by a Disney Parks-specific character, and it is very clear fans love these niche icons and are excited to see them being given the doll treatment. “I’m a big fan of the unusual characters myself,” gushed designer J. Fuchs, “so I really try to capture the feeling the original piece of artwork or animatronic evokes.”

The Redd animatronic debuted when the Pirates of the Caribbean auction scene was refreshed in 2018, and the confident, charismatic pirate captain can now be seen in the attraction at both Disneyland park and Magic Kingdom park in Walt Disney World. When we sail past her, she’s busy selling off the townspeople’s stolen rum and other treasures after the pirates have overrun the village, bringing her sharp wit and striking fashion sense to one of the most memorable scenes.

“Our doll is based on the updated version, so we have her posed out as she is in the ride, commanding the auction,” J explained. Packaging continues to play a special role in storytelling, and the team focused on details like the dimensional box for Redd to prop her foot on (just like the Audio-Animatronics figure stands), the auction banner, and even the iconic chicken in the background.

Designing the Redd Doll

I was eager to hear J’s thoughts about how the design process is approached differently when modeling dolls after animatronics in Disney Parks rather than animated characters onscreen. “We might be able to pop over to WDI or the park and see the outfits in person, match swatches, check out all the little details, and often talk to the people working on them,” J explained. “It’s hard to beat that for reference!”

I was surprised to hear that reimagining animated figures in doll form has its own set of challenges for the design team. J shared, “Working on the animated characters is tougher because you can’t always see what the details are, so we have to fill in the gaps in our information with historical reference and what works to give the closest effect to the movie.” In the case of Redd, not only do they have the animatronic for inspiration, but also the roaming character at Disneyland park, so they were able to blend elements from both lively ladies.

Like other limited edition Disney dolls, Redd is brought to life in a richly detailed and thoughtful manner, and the accessories on this femme fatale are fantastic. Her layered pirate costume is made up of a satin bodice, embroidered elements, ruffled trim, puffed sleeves, studded skirt, flowing petticoat, and molded boots – just to name a few standout features. J revealed that an Easter egg is hidden in the embroidery, with some fun iconography from the attraction like the swords and skulls being subtly included.

Her belt has accents like golden buckles and chains, with a duo of shiny pearled pistols tucked in at the waist alongside a gold key. The look is topped off with two necklaces, a choker, and of course a faux suede pirate hat with dramatic feathered flair. Even her flaming red hair is neatly styled with beads tucked into her braids.

The mix and contrast of materials here is so captivating, ranging from grittier leather and metals to softer satin and velvet. J shared how much they personally enjoy working with these unusual, unexpected fabrics, especially when paired with so many teeny tiny accessories.
