A new plaque has been installed at the entrance of Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure. This plaque honors legendary artist Jack Kirby for his unparalleled creative achievements. The plaque was unveiled before the park opened on August 28th, the artist’s 109th birthday.
Kirby was born in New York City on August 28, 1917. Throughout his career, he helped create some of the most popular Marvel characters. This included characters like Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Hulk, the Fantastic Four, and many more. In 2017, Jack Kirby was named a Disney Legend.
On his 109th birthday, this new plaque was revealed to the world with a quote by Kirby on it that says, “If you look at my characters, you will find me. No matter what kind of character you create or assume, a little of yourself must remain there.”
Editor-in-Chief Stephen Wacker was joined by members of the Kirby family for the unveiling of this plaque. Also on hand were Brent Davies (Vice President, Disney California Adventure Park) and Brent Strong (Executive Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering). One of Kirby’s most beloved creations, The Thing, A.K.A. Ben Grimm, also made an appearance for the private ceremony.
“Jack Kirby’s work continues to remind us that heroes can come from anywhere,” Davies said during the ceremony.
The plaque can now be seen by guests entering Avengers Campus. It welcomes guests to this immersive world that draws direct inspiration from the pages that Kirby created. Fans can also be on the lookout for examples of the “Kirby Krackle” throughout the land. This is the pioneering art effect that Kirby used to depict cosmic energy. The plaque says:

If you look at my characters, you will find me. No matter what kind of character you create or assume, a little of yourself must remain there.
The characters you created populate this campus as a living tribute to you, Jack.
