Disney continues to churn out more live-action adaptations of animated films. Just this summer, the live-action Moana has sailed into theaters. Last summer, it was Lilo & Stitch, which already has a sequel on the way. Work is currently underway on an upcoming Tangled live-action film from Disney as well. Most of these films have been fairly similar to their animated inspirations. Some have veered away in its own direction, like Cinderella. It appears that one of the next animated films that could be getting a live-action treatment is The Princess and the Frog.
Colman Domingo is currently in talks to co-write an original live-action film that focuses on Princess Tiana. The Hollywood Reporter has reported and confirmed Domingo would be co-writing with Tony-nominated Robert O’Hara. This approach to this story would be a story that is inspired by Disney’s animated The Princess and the Frog instead of a straight live-action remake. Beyond that, details are quite sparse.
The Princess and the Frog was released by Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2009. It was the last hand-drawn animated film from the iconic animation studio. The film focuses on Tiana, who dreams of opening her own restaurant someday. When Prince Naveen is transformed into a frog, he kisses Tiana in hopes of being turned back into a human. Instead, she turns into a frog, and they both have to figure out how to become human again. Along the way, they both learn more about themselves and find true love.
Colman Domingo is an American actor, playwright, and director. He has appeared in theatrical productions (including musicals), television programs, and films. He’s earned a Primetime Emmy Award, two Academy Award nominations, and two Tony Awards. Robert O’Hara is a Tony Award-nominated American playwright and director. He also directed 2011’s The Inheritance.
At this time, the future of this movie has many directions it could go. This is just the start of the process, and there will be many variables before it potentially becomes a film. With the mixed reception of the live-action Disney films that have come out of animated Disney films, this will definitely be one that fans keep their eyes on.
