The Matterhorn Bobsleds are the newest attraction to be scheduled for a refurbishment. Disney has shown dedication to proactively planning closures of attractions for refurbishments. These closures give Disney time to polish attractions, provide needed maintenance that can’t be done overnight, and sometimes even improve efficiencies for attractions.
The Matterhorn Bobsleds is generally refurbished every year. This year, it appears that the refurbishment will start on July 20th. This is according to the calendar on the Disneyland website. This means that the final day for guests to experience the attraction before this closure will be on July 19th. Last year, the attraction closed down in May for a multi-month refurbishment. This year, it isn’t known how long the refurbishment will be at this time.

The Matterhorn Bobsleds hold the distinction of being the first tubular steel coaster in the world. It was also Disneyland’s first roller coaster. It came to be after Walt Disney visited the filming for 1959’s Third Man on the Mountain. There, he saw the real Matterhorn and decided that Disneyland should have one. The attraction would open on June 14, 1959.

Disney has found that more reliable attractions lead to happier guests. This is one of the reasons that it makes proactive refurbishment of attractions a priority. For Fiscal Year 2025, the reduction of unplanned downtimes of attractions led to 1 million more rides for guests over the previous year. These refurbishments are planned well in advance, and every day and minute of them is used to get attractions into top shape.
