On this day in 1931, the ‘Silly Symphony’ cartoon ‘The China Plate’ was released. The short is a loose adaptation of the Willow Pattern legend about doomed star-crossed lovers, which is often depicted on porcelain tableware. In the cartoon, a scene on a plate comes to life. A boy rescues a girl from drowning, but the pair is chased by the Emperor and then a fire-breathing dragon! Although ‘The China Plate’ is considered culturally insensitive, it is one of the most beautiful and elaborate of the early ‘Silly Symphony’ shorts. [95 years ago in 2026]
