25 years ago today, many attractions and experiences were being dedicated ahead of the official opening of Disney California Adventure on February 8, 2001. One of these attractions was Golden Dreams. This was a show about the history of California. It was in the Golden State area of the park in the location where The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure can be found now. In fact, the entrance to Ariel’s Undersea Adventure is a remnant of the Golden Dreams building, which was a replica of the Palace of Fine Arts.
Golden Dreams had guests enter through the replica Palace of Fine Arts from San Francisco. In the theater, the history of California was shared by “Calafia, the Queen of California.” Whoopi Goldberg brought this character to life and appeared throughout the film and California’s history. The story was accompanied by the musical score that was written by Bruce Broughton. Walter Afanasieff wrote Just One Dream, which was performed by Heather Headley. If California had been in EPCOT (I don’t know how that would work), this is a show that would have fit right in. The final public performance can be seen below from September 2008.
