‘Snow White’ on Track for $45 Million Opening Weekend

On Thursday night moviegoers made their way to theaters to see Disney’s newest live-action remake, Snow White. Between the Thursday night previews and Friday screenings, the film earned $16 million. As of Saturday morning, the film is on track to earn around $45 million for its opening weekend at the box office.

The numbers aren’t super strong for Disney. The live-action remake of its original animated film is garnering numbers that are similar to its 2019 live-action Dumbo. This film had a $45 million opening weekend and went on to make $114 million domestic and $353 million. This was seen as a disappointment for the film that cost $170 million to make. In comparison, Snow White had a $270 million production budget.

Word-of-mouth reviews will most likely help the future of this film which stars Rachel Zegler in the title role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Several films in the last couple of years have had slow starts at the box office and continued to steadily grow. Recently, Mufasa: The Lion King had a weak opening at $35.4 million. It went on to gather some steam making $250 million in North America and over $700 million globally. It is unknown if this one will do that.

Snow White has also drawn criticism from multiple directions for comments and stances made by its stars, along with some approaches taken with some of its characters. In particular, the seven dwarfs. Disney undoubtedly hopes that the “fairest of them all” will fair more like Mufasa and less like Dumbo at the box office.
