Robert Downey Jr. Returns to Marvel Cinematic Universe As Doctor Doom

Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but it won’t be as Iron Man. Instead, it will be as  Victor von Doom. He will be bringing this character to life in two new Avengers movies. Both of these movies will be directed by the Russo brothers. These films will mark a return for both Downey Jr. and Joe and Anthony Russo.

The news that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes after he won an Academy Award earlier this year for his role in Oppenheimer. He won the best supporting actor Oscar. In recent interviews, he has shared that he is open to the MCU. It just wasn’t known how exactly that would happen. Now, he will be returning for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

The news was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in a panel in Hall-H.

After an Avengers: Secret Wars logo appeared onscreen, Joe said, “There is one very important character that is required to do Secret Wars justice… It could be the most important character in all of the Marvel Universe.” The stage was flooded in green light as people dressed as Doctor Doom suddenly appeared while eerie music played throughout Hall H. “If we’re gonna bring Victor Von Doom to movie theaters worldwide, then I think we’re going to need the greatest actor in the world to play that character,” Joe said. “As proof of the unimaginable possibilities in the Marvel multiverse, we give you the one person who could play Victor Von Doom.”

“New mask, same task,” Downey Jr. said on stage while clad in Doctor Doom robes, after taking off his metal mask. “What can I say, I like playing complicated characters.”

Fans may be asking how this is possible. However, in the Marvel comics there are quite a few similarities between Stark and Doom. They both are rich, wear metal masks, and also are scientific geniuses. After Marvel comics Civil War II in 2016, Stark ended up in a coma where Victor Von Doom took ended up taking over the role of Iron Man in the comic series Infamous Iron Man.

This time around, Robert Downey Jr., who is known for playing Iron Man, will take on the role of Doctor Doom. This is a multiverse story, however. There is a possibility that this is all an alternate-universe version of Stark in these upcoming movies. The Russo brothers have said that Doomsday is building up to a collision of parallel universes in Secret Wars.

Currently, it is expected that Avengers: Doomsday will be arriving in theaters in May 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars will be arriving the following year in May 2027.
