On this day in 1999, the Disney Channel Original Movie ‘Johnny Tsunami’ was released. It follows surfer Johnny K. as he moves from an idyllic life in Hawaii with his beloved grandfather to snowy Vermont. Putting his surfing skills to good use, Johnny learns to snowboard, a skill that will help him compete for the right of rival groups to ski and snowboard together. ‘Johnny Tsunami’ would be nominated for a Humanitas Prize in the Children’s Live-Action Category.
