Inside Out 2, the newest film from Disney and Pixar, continues the story of Riley that began in the original film. Now a teenager, she is facing a bigger world and dealing with more emotions. This means that her original emotions are now dealing with new emotions as well! This apparently is a story that is intriguing movie-goers as this film had the biggest opening day at the box office in 2024. On Friday and preview screenings, the movie brought in $62 million from 4,440 locations.
With this strong opening, the film is on track to become the most successful to date in 2024. Currently that distinction is held by Dune: Part Two which earned $82.5 million on its opening weekend. Inside Out 2 will also be the first film of 2024 to garner a nine-figure domestic opening in nearly 11 months. The last movie that held this distinction was Barbie which was released last summer.
The success of the weekend has to be a welcome success for Pixar Animation Studios, which has struggled since the beginning of the pandemic. Onward was released just as the pandemic was closing things down. This was followed by Soul, Luca, and Turning Red. All of these films were released straight to Disney+. The release directly to Disney+ is credited by Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter with training audiences to just watch Pixar films on Disney+. This began to change with the release of Elemental last year, which was a slow burn but eventually had a decent run in the box office.
This time around, Inside Out 2 looks to compete with other bigger Pixar films. In fact, with the track it is currently on it could end up being in the top five most successful Pixar openings for its films. This puts it in the ranks with Incredibles 2 ($182 million), Finding Dory ($135 million), Toy Story 4 ($120 million) and Toy Story 3 ($110 million). All of these films were sequels.
As of Saturday, it seems that movie-goers and critics are enjoying the sequel to the Pete Docter directed Inside Out. This film is directed by Kelsey Mann. Daps Magic will continue to track the progress of this film and report on its successes as they become available.
