Disney has announced that it will be closing the Disney Movie Club. This comes as traditional disc media continues to see a decline and sales and streaming service continue to grow in influence. An email was sent out to Members stating that after 23 years, the Disney Movie Club is saying goodbye. The following email was sent out:
After serving 10 million valued Club Members, we have made the difficult decision to close the Disney Movie Club. We will miss the opportunity to be a part of the lives of so many Disney fans, including you, but we will be forever grateful for the time you’ve chosen to spend with us.
But we’re not done yet! In the months to come, we’ll be piling on the perks to celebrate you, our loyal Member. Look for amazing offers to help you finish building your collection with movies you love – for memories that are yours to cherish forever.
The last day for Members to make orders will be May 20, 2024. This is also when account points need to be spent by as well. Accounts will then be closed on July 20, 2024. The final day to return anything will be on September 20, 2024.
This update comes as other companies have backed away from traditional DVD/Blu-Ray sales. Best Buy recently began to remove physical media from its shelves and was set to stop selling it entirely in 2024. Netflix also recently stopped renting out DVDs by mail. This comes as physical media sales in the United States fell $1.5 billion during the first half of 2022 to $754 million in the first half of 2023. This was a 28% year-over-year drop.
Disney Movie Club allowed for Members to purchase physical media of their favorite Disney titles. They could also access special discounts, merchandise, and more. It often was a place where specific and rare films could be purchased when they couldn’t be found anywhere else. Now, Members will have until May 20 to make those last purchases.
