The impact of the SAG/AFTRA is beginning to be taken under consideration by Disney in terms of its release dates for upcoming movies. Bloomberg is reporting that Disney is contemplating changing the release dates for several upcoming films as the strike continues with no sign of ending anytime soon.
According to Bloomberg, Disney is considering new delayed release dates for the following films:
- Poor Things – Current release date: September 8 – This film from Searchlight Pictures has Oscar winner Emma Stone with The Favourite filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe.
- Next Goal Wins – Current release date: November 17 – Also from Searchlight Pictures, this film is directed by Taika Waititi and is a true-life story about soccer.
- Wish – Current release date: November 22 – This new film from Walt Disney Animation Studios commemorates The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary. It features the voice talents of Oscar winner Ariana DeBose and also Chris Pine.
- Magazine Dreams – Current release date: December 8 – This film is from Searchlight Pictures and features the controversial actor Jonathan Majors. It is a bodybuilder drama.
One upcoming film that will not be getting a new release date is Haunted Mansion. This movie, based on the Disney attraction, is set to be released on July 28, 2023. This will not be delayed as marketing is too far along for Disney to make any changes. Disney held a red carpet world premiere for the film a little over a week ago at the Disneyland Resort. No SAG/AFTRA actors were in attendance but the director did attend.
Bloomberg’s report did not mention The Marvels, which just had a new trailer released a few days ago and is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 10, 2023. It noted that the delay discussions are in the early stages and any release date changes would come after a schedule review.
