Audition Dates for 2020 Disneyland Resort All-American College Band Announced as Program Celebrates 50th Anniversary

The Disneyland Resort has announced dates for the next Disneyland Resort All-American College Band. The 2020 Disneyland Resort All-American College Band will be a very special band as it will also celebrate the 50th year of the program. The audition was announced on social media and will give aspiring students the opportunity to be a part of this very special band.

The 2020 audition tour for the Disneyland Resort All-American College Band will include the following destinations:

  • Miami, Florida – January 12, 2020
  • Nashville, Tennesee – January 25, 2020
  • Atlanta, Georgia – January 26, 2020
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – February 7, 2020
  • Chicago, Illinois – February 8, 2020
  • Dallas, Texas – February 22, 2020
  • Anaheim, California – February 29, 2020

For the 2019 Disneyland Resort All-American College Band, the following was the audition criteria for the band that was utilized. Something similar will most likely be used this year.

Disneyland Resort All-American College Band Audition Info

  • Be prepared to show proficiency in three styles of music (jazz, classical, big band, etc)
  • Improvisation with recorded media is acceptable
  • Please provide your own media player (iPod, smartphone, etc)
  • Sight-reading skills are required
  • Sign up for an audition time at your desired audition location when they are posted at disneyauditions.com
WIND INSTRUMENTS – Trumpet, Trombone, Sax, Tuba, French Horn
Classical

Two classical excerpts, maximum one minute each, demonstrating technical proficiency and lyrical ability. (Suggestion: Solo concerto, etude or any orchestral excerpt.)

Jazz

Prepare Billie’s Bounce. Be prepared to play the head and once through the changes. Also prepare any other tune (one minute max) from the jazz idiom that will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of jazz styles and improvisation (i.e. Nica’s Dream, There Will Never Be Another You, All the Things You Are). Improvise on at least one chorus.

Saxophone Doubles

Select two excerpts; technical and lyrical; to demonstrate an ability to perform on clarinet and flute/piccolo.

Optional – Lead Players Only

Prepare two excerpts that will demonstrate an ability to phrase in a jazz style and play in the upper register. One medium swing, one up-tempo swing or ballad.

BASS – Acoustic, Electric

Perform Billie’s Bounce (play the head), walk a bass line (2 choruses) and improvise two choruses. Perform any other tune from the jazz idiom that will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of jazz styles and improvisation (i.e. Nica’s Dream, There Will Never Be Another You, All the Things You Are). Improvise on at least one chorus.

JAZZ PIANO
Classical

DRUMMERS
  • Perform Billie’s Bounce (play the head and once through the changes).
  • Prepare a rudimental etude emphasizing technical facility.
  • Be prepared to demonstrate the following styles on drumset: Bossa Nova, Samba, medium swing, jazz waltz, 12/8, Afro Cuban, up-tempo swing, Ballad w/brushes, and Hip-Hop. Play on each style one minute.

2020 Disneyland Resort All-American College Band

The 2020 Disneyland Resort All-American College Band will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the band. Generally, the program runs from mid/late May until the beginning/middle of August. The band is composed of the following instruments:

  • 4 Trumpets
  • 3 Tenor Trombones (double on Euphonium encouraged)
  • 1 Bass Trombone (double on Euphonium encouraged)
  • 2 Alto Sax (double on flute/clarinet/piccolo encouraged)
  • 2 Tenor Sax (double on flute/clarinet/piccolo encouraged)
  • 1 Baritone Sax (double on flute/clarinet/piccolo encouraged)
  • 2 Tuba/Sousaphone-will play on tuba and sousaphone
  • 2 Horn/Mellophone-will play on French horn and mellophone
  • 1 Snare Drum (doubles on Drum set or Auxiliary Percussion)
  • 1 Tenor Drum/Quads (doubles on Drum set or Auxiliary Percussion)
  • 1 Bass (Acoustic & Electric; doubles on Bass Drum or tuba)
  • 1 Jazz Piano (doubles on auxiliary percussion)

There are no string, theater, singer or dancer positions.

 

Disneyland Resort All-American College Band Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years old
  • Must be currently enrolled in a college or university and have completed one year by summer
  • Diverse musical background
  • Excellent musicality
  • Expressive/outgoing personality

Students who are selected to be a part of the program will be provided weekly compensation during the program, lodgings, and also pro-line Yamaha instruments to use throughout the course of the program.

Currently, only general details are known about the auditioning dates and locations for the 2020 Disneyland Resort All-American College Band. More details will be released in the coming weeks and DAPS MAGIC will continue to report on any updates as they arrive.
