Alan Menken is working on bringing the 1997 Disney animated film Hercules to the stage. In a recent interview with the Orange County Register, the Oscar-award winning composer revealed this project.
The news came as he was being interviewed about the 2017 D23 Expo. The 67 year-old composer was sharing about his new show, A Whole New World of Alan Menken. According to Menken there will be music from the entire span of his career, with accompanying visuals on a screen. “We’re going to have fun. I’m going to open my trunk of songs and share.”
When sharing about what he thought were some of his underrated scores he shared about Hercules saying, “I have a very strong belief like ‘Newsies,’ ‘Hercules’ is going to have a moment that will surprise people. Actually, I’m working on a stage version of ‘Hercules.’” His manager clarified that he is working on generating sufficient interest to justify moving forward on production of a Hercules stage show. At this point, this has not happened.
Alan Menken is no stranger to the world of both stage and film musicals. Through the last 40 years he has created music that has been the soundtrack of many Disney fan’s lives. This includes the music to Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Newsies, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pocahontas, and so many more!
