Disney announced this weekend that it had greenlit an animated TV series adaptation for the global bestselling book franchise Artemis Fowl. This series will be broadcast on the Disney Channel and Disney+. The announcement was made at New York Comic-Con by the author of the franchise Eoin Colfer, during a “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel. For the new animated series, Colfer will serve as an executive producer. He will bring his creative vision as the series digs deeper into the characters and lore of the beloved book series that is celebrating its 25th anniversary of the first book this year.

Artemis Fowl is an action-adventure fantasy series that follows a 13-year-old genius Artemis Fowl as he uncovers an underground world of armed, dangerous, and surprisingly high-tech fairies. This comes as he launches a plan to capture one and then steal its magic to heal his dying mom and save his family.
Joining Colfer as executive producers for Artemis Fowl are Emmy and Annie Award winner Ben Juwono (Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Big Hero 6: The Series) and Colleen Evanson (Prep and Landing: The Snowball Protocol, DuckTales, Monsters at Work).
“For more than two decades, Eoin Colfer’s ‘Artemis Fowl’ books have captivated readers around the world with unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building, and gripping adventures,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Kids & Family. “Bringing this beloved franchise to life as an animated series gives us the opportunity to introduce a new generation to Artemis’ world while honoring the longtime fans who have cherished these stories for years.”
Colfer said, “I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the ‘Artemis Fowl’ animation on screen. Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands.”
The first Artemis Fowl book was published in 2001. Since then, the series has grown to become a global phenomenon. At this point, over 35 million copies have been sold globally. It has also been translated into 48 different languages.
Artemis Fowl is the newest animated story offering to join the library of Disney+. It joins other series that include Dragon Striker, Phineas and Ferb, Big City Greens, along with the upcoming Messi and the Giants, Kingdom Hearts, Warrior Cats, and Journey. Disney says that the series reflects how the platform continues to focus on creating stories that are filled with magic, wonder, adventure, and heart for a new generation of kids and families.
