On this day in 1946, the Donald Duck short ‘Lighthouse Keeping’ was released. Donald spends his nights tending a traditional flame-powered lighthouse, but the endlessly rotating beacon makes it impossible to enjoy a quiet book. Bored and irritated, he turns the light on a sleeping pelican, repeatedly flashing it in the bird’s face to wake him. The prank quickly backfires, leading to a battle inside the lighthouse as Donald and the pelican switch the light on and off. Though unnamed in the cartoon, the mischievous pelican was later identified as Marblehead. [80 years ago in 2026]
