Star Trek Beyond

Paramount Skydance is Moving On From Current Kelvin Crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise for Future Star Trek Films

,

It appears that the Kelvin timeline of Star Trek films will be staying as a trilogy. Over the last 9 years, since Star Trek Beyond came out, there have been multiple attempts at making another movie with Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. However, none have taken off. Now, it seems like this will be permanent. This comes after this crew made Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond.

Recently, Skydance took over Paramount under the leadership of CEO David Ellison. In a recent Variety article, it was revealed that Paramount does want to make a new Star Trek film. However, it won’t be with the current movie crew that has been featured in the last three movies. Instead, Ellison shared with Variety that they are looking at a new Star Trek movie.

Some long-gestating productions, such as the Miles Teller sports drama “Winter Games,” have been put into turnaround, while there has also been a focus on reinvigorating certain franchises. The hope is to have a fresh “Star Trek” movie, though the studio has moved on from the idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot.

Star Trek: Picard

What does this mean for the future of Star Trek? It appears that there will be another cinematic reboot for the franchise. It also appears that beyond there being a commitment to make another movie, there are more questions than answers. There is no shortage of possibilities, though. There are several Star Trek stories that have been launched since Star Trek Beyond. These could make the leap from Paramount+ to the big screen. Paramount could decide to reboot and recast a Star Trek crew, show, or movie, with new actors. They could also go somewhere that Star Trek hasn’t gone before and tell an entirely new story with new characters (and maybe some crossovers or references to crossovers).

There had been a movie that was to be a Star Trek origins film with Toby Haynes directing. Seth Grahame-Smith was attached as well to write the script. No mention of this film was made in the Variety article, and there have been no official updates about it.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The other big question for the Star Trek world is what the future looks like on television/streaming. It is unknown what the future will look like for future shows under the leadership of David Ellison and his team. It is unknown if future Star Trek series and movies will be brought under the guidance of one person or continue to be segmented. It would make sense that there would be a Star Trek czar overseeing all future Star Trek projects. Hopefully, this person would have a depth of knowledge and respect for the franchise, accompanied by a vision for the future.

Ellison shared after Skydance took over Paramount that Star Trek is “absolutely a priority.” What exactly that looks like remains to be seen. Fans can hold on to the hope that this priority leads to new and exciting adventures as Star Trek moves boldly forward.
