A Miss Piggy movie is in the works. The news comes from a podcast that Jennifer Lawrence was on recently. During an episode of Las Culturistas with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, Lawrence revealed the project, saying, “I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just gonna. Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie, and Cole Escola is writing it.” The news comes as The Muppets are gearing up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show next year, where Miss Piggy made her debut.
When Lawrence was asked if she and Stone would appear in the film, she replied, “I think so, we have to.”
Cole Escola, who apparently is writing the film, is known for writing and starring in Oh, Mary!, which debuted on Broadway in 2024. They earned a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for this role. Lawrence is known for multiple roles and has appeared in the X-Men series, The Hunger Games franchise, and her films have grossed over $6 billion globally. Academy Award-winner Emma Stone also has an impressive career and has appeared in films like The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, La La Land, for which she won an Oscar, and Poor Things, for which she won her other Oscar. She has also appeared in Cruella for Disney.

Miss Piggy first appeared in The Muppet Show. A few years after her debut, Frank Oz shared with the New York Times her origins, saying, “She grew up in a small town (most likely Keystone, Iowa); her father died when she was young and her mother wasn’t that nice to her. She had to enter beauty contests to survive. She has a lot of vulnerability which she has to hide, because of her need to be a superstar.” Miss Piggy started with a small role in The Muppet Show, and that grew. Eventually, she wasn’t just a member of the cast but a star. However, being a star has never been enough. Miss Pigg has always wanted to be THE star.
The Muppets are currently in the midst of their 70th anniversary celebration. Throughout this celebration, a different Muppet has been put in the spotlight each week. Next year, The Muppet Show will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. For this, there will be an anniversary special edition of The Muppet Show that will star special guest Sabrina Carpenter. This is set to debut in 2026.
While Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that work is underway on a movie with Miss Piggy, that doesn’t mean it will make it to theaters or Disney+. It also doesn’t mean that Disney or The Muppets Studio is working on this or aware of it yet. Neither Disney nor The Muppets has announced or confirmed this film, only Lawrence. Until that happens, anything could happen with this project. Nothing may happen. However, with the trio of heavy hitters in the entertainment realm working on it, there is a chance that something could come of this. They also bring an incredible amount of talent (and humor) to any potential movie with Miss Piggy.

The Muppets have made many movies. The first was 1979’s The Muppet Movie. The most recent was Muppets Most Wanted in 2014. Through most of those, Miss Piggy has appeared with the rest of the Muppets and Kermit the Frog, with whom she has had an ongoing romantic relationship. This has gone up and down and ebbed and flowed. It is unknown if Kermit will be a part of this film. Seeing that the plot has not been revealed, anything is possible if this movie does indeed happen.
