Gino Disney's Animal Kingdom Gorilla

Gino, the Silverback Gorilla at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Passes Away

Gino, the 44-year-old silverback western lowland gorilla at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, has passed away. He was at Disney’s Animal Kingdom from the day it opened and was beloved by the Disney cast and guests alike. The news was announced by Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President, Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, with the following post on Instagram:

We are heartbroken to share the passing of Gino, our beloved 44-year-old western lowland gorilla. For nearly 30 years, Gino touched countless lives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with his playful spirit, gentle humor, and steady presence as a devoted father and troop leader.

Gino leaves behind an incredible legacy – 14 offspring, global contributions to gorilla care and conservation, and the lasting memories of every cast member and guest he inspired.

Though he would have turned 45 this December, Gino’s story will live on in the future of his species and in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Thank you, Gino. You will always be part of our family.

For decades, guests would walk through the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail and see Gino. The 400-pound gorilla was the oldest at Walt Disney World Resort. He was known for helping to inspire the conservationists, veterinarians, and animal keepers of today and tomorrow.

Although being the alpha-gorilla at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, he also could be a goofball and liked to engage with both the people and animals around him. He was known for paying attention to guests, making eye contact, and even interacting with children through the window of his habitat. He would change his behavior based on the families on the other side. Gina loved to be the center of attention and appeared to have an eye for cameras. He also appeared in front of millions when The Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom series was released on Disney+. He showed off his cake-sharing skills, being tested by the rest of the troop in this series.

The death of Gino will be felt by both the staff at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and guests visiting the park alike. Daps Magic sends condolences to all those who are mourning the loss of this gentle giant today.
