George Lucas to Make First Appearance at San Diego Comic-Con

George Lucas is heading to San Diego Comic-Con for the first time. He isn’t going alone, either. The Star Wars creator is set to appear at Hall H with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, along with artist and Star Wars prequels production designer Doug Chiang. Together, they will discuss the power of illustrated stories. They will also be offering a sneak peek at the new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

The panel, called Sneak Peek of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, will be moderated by Grammy, Emmy-, and Golden Globe-winning actress and recording artist Queen Latifah. This will take place on Sunday at the infamous Hall H in the San Diego Convention Centre. She will lead a discussion that discusses “the power of illustrated stories and the role of narrative art in society. From ancient cave drawings and hieroglyphics to paintings, murals, illustrations, comics, digital media, and sculptures, this panel will delve into the universal language of illustrated storytelling.”

David Glanzer, Chief Communications and Strategy Officer of Comic-Con, said: “We are beyond thrilled to welcome George Lucas to Comic-Con for the very first time. Nearly five decades ago, Star Wars made one of its earliest public appearances at our convention, along with a booth featuring Howard Chaykin’s now legendary Star Wars poster as a promotional item. Now, to have Mr. Lucas return—this time to debut the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art—is a true full-circle moment. His lifelong dedication to visual storytelling and world-building resonates deeply with us and our community, and the museum’s mission to celebrate narrative art in all its forms perfectly reflects what Comic-Con has championed from the very beginning.”‍‍

While Star Wars has appeared multiple times at San Diego Comic-Con, dating back to 1976, George Lucas himself has never appeared at the convention. Since then, it has appeared many times with some of its creatives, storytellers, and actors appearing in front of enthusiastic crowds of fans.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is set to open in Los Angeles in 2026. When it opens, it hopes to “inspire and connect people through the exploration of visual stories and their influences in society.”

George Lucas and Mellody Hobson co-founded the museum. “The stories that art tells are often key to understanding a society and its aspirations—whether our own or others,” Lucas has said. “We hope the Lucas Museum will help audiences better understand the world and build toward a more just and empathetic society.”

The museum will house a collection of artwork that includes the work of illustrators like Norman Rockwell, Jessie Willcox Smith, Maxfield Parrish, and N. C. Wyeth; comic artists like Winsor McCay, Frank Frazetta, George Herriman, Jack Kirby, and Robert Crumb; muralists such as Judith F. Baca and Diego Rivera; as well as other artists like Frida Kahlo, Jacob Lawrence, Charles White, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and Robert Colescott. The museum also holds film archives, including the entire Historic Lucasfilm Archives and the Separate Cinema Archive.
