Muppet*Vision 3D recently closed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This favorite of Muppet fans had been a fixture at the park for over three decades. With the closure, many fans mourned the loss of the chance to go on a tour of Muppet Studios with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Waldo C. Graphic, Sweetums, and more. It was also a chance to see the work of Jim Henson in one of his last projects, along with the final performance of Richard Hunt.
With the closure announcement of Muppet*Vision 3D, Disney said, “As we move forward with these changes, we are having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future.”
This has brought up the question of “how?” for many fans. During an event celebration of 70 years of The Jim Henson Company, one possibility was revealed. The Jim Henson Company revealed that it was in discussions with Disney about how to adapt the film for virtual reality. Lisa Henson, Jim Henson’s daughter, revealed this information. She also said that Muppet*Vision 3D had been documented with VR cameras and that efforts could already be underway to preserve and digitally adapt the movie.
At this point, no announcement has been officially made for the future of this film, which was shown for 34 years at Walt Disney World Resort. However, the comments made by Henson give fans hope for that, sometime in the future, there could be the opportunity to see it again. This could be on a device like the Apple Vision Pro or perhaps even Disney+. With no announcements being made, it is all speculation at this point what the future for this Muppet film holds.
For now, fans will just have to resort to watching Muppet*Vision 3D on YouTube or reliving it in their memories. Here is a video of the show that the Daps Magic team filmed before its closure:
