Chief Creative Officer at Pixar Pete Docter took to the stage at SXSW on Saturday morning to share more about the future of the land that is based on Monsters, Inc. Specifically, he and Imagineer Michael Hundgen shared about the Monsters, Inc. Coaster in Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Monstropolis.

Before getting into details, Docter talked a little bit about the creative and collaborative process. He said that when they are creating worlds and places to visit in the movies made by Pixar Animation Studios, he is always asking himself, “Is this something Imagineers could create, and we could walk into?” If the answer is no, they need to keep working. If the answer is yes, they keep moving forward and collaboration is in order to see if it is possible that it could end up in the Disney Parks.

The attraction and land were first announced at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event last year. Imagineers are working hard to bring the world of Monsters, Inc to life. This will include also bringing some of its monstrous inhabitants to life, including James P. Sullivan, Mike Wazowski, and others. While guests will get to experience Monstropolis, they will also get to experience the door vault that is a central part of the process that Monsters, Inc. utilizes to visit kids’ bedrooms around the world.
“Imagineers have been itching to turn that moment into an attraction ever since we saw it for the first time,” Hundgen shared.
There are still many details that still remain to be revealed. However, during the SXSW panel, Docter and Hundgen shared a video of what the load area for the attraction will be like. This also included some information about the first-ever suspended coaster in a Disney Park. It will also have the first-ever vertical lift.

A video of how the attraction will work was shared during the presentation. It showed how guests will board the ride vehicle, be lifted into the air, and then zoom off into the door vault. It will be just like the movie! Hundgen said that it’s going to be, “an experience that’s as memorable and fun as the film.”
“I can tell you that everyone at Pixar is excited about how this is coming together,” Docter told the crowd. “It really is like a dream come true for us.”
There are plenty of other announcements that came out of the SXSW panel on Saturday morning. This included updates from the worlds of Star Wars, Marvel, and also Pixar. Daps Magic is covering them all so be sure to subscribe to the mailing list, social media, and YouTube to not miss any of them!
