On this day in 1985, Disney broke ground on Disney-MGM Studios, the third theme park at Walt Disney World. The park would open in 1989 on a 135-acre plot of land located about a mile from EPCOT. Today, the park is known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The idea came after Michael Eisner took over as Disney CEO. It was originally envisioned as an entertainment-centered pavilion at EPCOT, but grew to become a potential rival to Universal Studios Florida. [40 years ago in 2025]
