Newsies was originally released as a movie musical in 1992. It was directed by Kenny Ortega and starred Christian Bale, Bill Pullman, Ann-Margret, and Robert Duvall. The songs were written by Alan Menken with lyrics by Jack Feldman and had an underscore by J. A. C. Redford. Initially, the movie was a flop. However, as time went by it gained popularity. Eventually, it was made into a Broadway musical. After a brief run at the Paper Mill Playhouse, it opened on Broadway in 2012. The musical saw Jack Kelly (Jeremy Jordan) standing up against Joseph Pulitzer (John Dossett) after he hiked up prices for his papers. Along the way, Jack rallies his fellow newsboy to fight for change and falls in love with a young writer named Katherine (Lindsay).
The Broadway version of Newsies was nominated for eight Tony Awards. It won two: Christopher Gattelli for Best Choreography and lyricist Jack Feldman and composer Alan Menken for Best Original Score.
