Disney announced this week that it would be closing Muppet*Vision 3D at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. With its closure will come the arrival of a new land themed to Monsters, Inc. The Muppets won’t be leaving the park, however. Instead, they will be getting their own ride in the form of a new reimagined version of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. This has led to many opinions being shared by fans on the internet as they processed this change.
On Saturday, The Jim Henson Company weighed in with its own statement on the matter. The following statement was shared on social media:
Jim Henson’s final project was Muppet*Vision 3D, now regarded as a true theme park classic. Innovation was always Jim Henson’s north star, and his trailblazing career led him to a unique challenge: a truly immersive Muppet experience where audiences are part of the happy chaos of the iconic Muppet Show. Originally debuting in 1991, Muppet*Vision 3D combined 3D technology with real-world practical effects, alongside animatronic and live Muppet characters. The result was a one-of-a-kind Jim Henson experience, and an unforgettable capstone to Jim’s magnificent career. As we learn of the show’s upcoming closure in its current form at Disney’s Hollywood Studios , we look forward to Muppet*Vision 3D’s next act.
The attraction originally opened as Jim Henson’s Muppet*Vision 3D on May 16, 1991, at what was then known as Disney-MGM Studios. The attraction was innovative and included multiple different tools for storytelling. Along with the 3D film, it also included audio-animatronics, a full-figured costumed character, bubbles, water effects, lighting effects, and other fun effects that created a 4D experience. The attraction was replicated at the Disneyland Resort in Disney’s California Adventure on February 8, 2001. It was an opening day attraction for the park that is now known as Disney California Adventure. This version of the attraction closed on November 1, 2014.
Disney has said that they are “having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future.” What this looks like remains to be seen.
