Moana 2 continues to break records and flex its strength. After a record-breaking preview night with $13.8 million, the film continues to sail towards more records to break. On Thursday, the sequel earned $28 million at the Box Office as people made their way to the theaters on Thanksgiving.
At its current pace, the film could make $175 million throughout the course of the holiday weekend. This would see it pass up Frozen II’s $125 million in 2019 and Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s $109 million in 2013. Some estimates have the film surpassing $200 million over the course of the weekend. Already it has earned $85.5 million domestically. It already is the top-earning Thanksgiving release as it surpassed the $15 million that Frozen II earned. It brought in $57.5 million on its official opening day on Wednesday. Globally, the film has earned $109.6 million. It is possible that this film could end up having the strongest five-day opening of all time.
At this point, Moana 2 has the strongest opening day for any more from Walt Disney Animation Studios. It is the third biggest opening day for an animated film, after Incredibles 2 and Inside Out 2. It also has the third biggest opening day in 2024 following Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2.
Moana 2 continues the story of Moana as she seeks to find more people from different islands in the ocean and protect the future for her own. Daps Magic’s review of this film can be found here. Originally it was being made as a series for Disney+. However, with the return of Bob Iger to the role of CEO of The Walt Disney Company, it was changed to be made into a full-length feature with a theatrical release.
