Agatha All Along

Agatha All Along: Episodes 1 and 2 Review

Just in time for autumn and spooky season, Marvel Studios has released its newest show, Agatha All Along. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve mostly been off the Marvel wagon for a bit but they knew how to draw me back in, by making it spooky and witchy! I had the opportunity to see the first two episodes early and will be sharing my thoughts below. I’ll be avoiding direct spoilers but if you want to go in blind, I suggest reading this AFTER seeing the first two episodes.

In Agatha All Along, “the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they’re missing. Together, Agatha and this mysterious Teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road…”

Agatha All Along kicks off its first episode in a TV show style reminiscent of WandaVision. This is a good spot to stop and remind you that you’ll want to watch WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness before starting this show. Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) is brought out of the state Wanda left her in by a character that viewers only know thus far as Teen (Joe Locke). In the first episode, we are also introduced to Aubrey Plaza’s character, Rio Vidal who seems to be a nemesis of Agatha’s (to the surprise of no one).

Episode Two primarily focuses on Agatha and Teen building their coven to travel The Witches’ Road. It feels very much like the part of a heist movie where each person has a talent they need. The coven is also joined by a character from WandaVision (I won’t spoil who). Additionally, we get our first glimpse of the Salem’s Seven (presumably the villains of the show, but it is still too early to tell). In this episode, we also get to see the coven perform The Ballad of the Witches’ Road. When I tell you I had goosebumps I’m not exaggerating.

I thought the first two episodes were a great start! I loved that it made a nod towards WandaVision, which has been my favorite Marvel show so far. The character dynamics seem like a lot of fun and feel like there will be a lot of interesting reveals. The heist vibe lightens the mood of the otherwise sort of spooky vibes the show offers. Speaking of spooky, I am excited to see more of the Salem Seven and what they bring to the show. There is a detail in these episodes that ties them to Agatha in a less obvious way that I think comic fans will enjoy!

It’s also worth noting that a majority of the characters featured in the show are also from the comics. I will be putting together a guide that will go up in the next day or so (it will also be continuously updated as the show continues). It will discuss in more detail some of the character changes that have been made and what I hope these characters’ involvement means for the show. I will also discuss the aforementioned details about the Salem Seven. You definitely don’t want to miss it!

The first two episodes of Agatha All Along are now streaming on Disney+. Future episodes will be released weekly every Wednesday at 6 pm PST until October 30th when the penultimate episode and finale will both premiere. Have you watched Agatha All Along yet?
