Hopefully, by now you have started watching Agatha All Along. If not, you may want to return later as this guide will be full of spoilers! As promised, I’ve compiled a guide for those watching Agatha All Along! It will include character information, theories, recommended reading, and more! I will also be updating this guide as the show goes on so you’ll want to check back weekly!
In Agatha All Along, “the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they’re missing. Together, Agatha and this mysterious Teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road…”
Before You Watch Agatha All Along
I strongly recommend that before you watch Agatha All Along you watch the following shows and movies:
- WandaVision
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
The Characters
- Agatha Harkness- The titular character of the show first appeared in Fantastic Four #94. She was the nanny to Reed Richards and Sue Storm’s son, Franklin. Up until recently, Agatha wasn’t even really bad (more morally ambiguous), she even was friendly with Scarlet Witch. She even helped the Avengers and Fantastic Four at times. It will be interesting to see if she gets a redemption arc or if she will become more morally gray like Loki.
- Rio Vidal- We don’t know much about Rio Vidal yet but there is speculation online that she is either a female version of The Emerald Warlock or a variation of Mother Nature/Gaea. This will be updated as we know more!
- “Teen”- Like Rio, not much is known about “Teen” yet. However, the prevailing theory is that this will be Wiccan. Wiccan first appeared in Young Avengers #1 and is the reincarnation of William Maximoff. Several show hints seem to support this like the M that appears when he tries to say his name and the fact that he has a boyfriend. A fair amount of Marvel shows have been building the Young Avengers team so this would also make sense.
- Lilia Calderu- In the comics, Lilia Calderu was known as Lilia Witch-Queen of the Gypsies. She first appeared in Marvel Premiere #12. Fortunately, they have removed the problematic name and did not make her a stereotype of the Romani people. Marvel has even gone so far as to change her name to Lilia Witch-Queen of the Romani on their official site. In the comics she is only around for the one issue, enslaves Doctor Strange, and releases him to fight the living gargoyle but dies after the fight. I kind of hope that the show gives her another ending because Patti Lupone deserves better than this outcome!
- Jennifer Kale- Jennifer Kale aka Witch Woman first appeared in Adventure into Fear #11. Within the comics, she was known to have a psychic connection to Man-Thing and was thus an ally of his. Does this mean that we will get another Man-Thing appearance? It’s been a while since we saw him in Werewolf by Night, so hopefully! Within the comics, Jennifer also is the descendant of several Ghost Riders. Does this mean we’ll see more of her in the future?
- Alice Wu-Gulliver- Alice Wu-Guliver is one of the more contemporary characters in this group. She first appeared in Doctor Strange: Last Days of Magic #1. She is also referred to as The Wu. In the comics, she is a detective for the Hong Kong Police. So the show has a similar back story for her but not quite. Her mother is deceased in the comics after being killed by a demonic magical assailant.
- Mrs. Hart- Mrs. Hart is one of the reasons it is worth watching WandaVision before Agatha All Along. Her character has no basis in the comics but is in several episodes of the show. I look forward to seeing her either blossom (pun intended) into some latent powers or how a non-witch will engage with the ongoings of the show. In either case, I think it will be a lot of fun!
- Nicholas Scratch- Nicholas Scratch is Agatha’s son both in the comics and show. As of the first two episodes we have only seen his name mentioned. It is absolutely likely that we will see more of him because he is the father of the Salem Seven. He first appeared in Fantastic Four #185. In the comics, he is always bad and even served Dormammu at one point. I’m curious as to whether he or Rio will be the big bad of the show. Time will tell!
- Salem Seven- The Salem Seven have a mixed history within the comics. Initially, they were bad and killed Agatha for stealing their powers. They are led by Vertigo (Agatha’s Grandaughter), who we have yet to see in the show. They first appeared in Fantastic Four #186.
Throughout the comics, most of these characters have come into contact with or worked with Scarlet Witch and/or Doctor Strange. Is Marvel introducing them to us for future films? Only time will tell!
