Inside Out 2 had a very strong opening weekend at the box office. In fact, it is the strongest opening for any movie since last summer’s Barbie. The Pixar animated sequel brought in a strong $155 million through the course of its opening weekend. This easily had it beat the competition this weekend. While Barbie still had a stronger opening than Inside Out 2 with its $162 million weekend opening last summer, the Pixar film is the first movie to break $100 million in its opening weekend since then. This far exceeds the expectations that were had for the film. It was expected that it would bring in $80 to $90 million during its opening weekend.
A Strong Animated Opening
Along with being the strongest film of the year to date, Inside Out 2 also had one of the strongest opening weekend of any animated film. It came in second place after Incredibles 2. The top five opening weekends for animated films are now as follows:
- Incredibles 2 – $182 million
- Inside out 2 – #$155 million
- The Super Mario Bros. Movie – $146 million
- Finding Dory – $135 million
- Frozen II – $130 million
International Strength
Internationally, the film also performed very well. The international box office brought in $140 million for the flick. This made it the most successful opening weekend for an animated film of all time. This surpassed Frozen II‘s $135 million. The new Pixar movie performed particularly well in Latin America. There it had the second biggest opening of all time, right after Avengers: Endgame.
Inside Out 2 garnered an impressive $295 million in total. This is very good news for the studio which spent $200 million on production for the film. It also means that this is Pixar’s second most successful opening weekend. This follows Incredibles 2, which earned $182 million on its opening weekend. It did beat out 2016’s Finding Dory ($135 million), and 2019’s Toy Story 4 ($120 million).
