Disney Branded Television has ordered a pilot for a sequel to the popular Wizards of Waverly Place. Gomez is also set to guest star in the pilot as Alex Russo, the character that really helped jump start her career. David Henrie will return to the role of Justin Russo as a series regular. He will be joined by Janice LeAnn Brown (Disney’s Just Roll with It), Alkaio Thiele (Call Me Kat) and Mimi Gianopulos (American Princess).

This sequel will see an adult Justin Russo having opted for a normal human life and leaving his wizard powers behind. This is so he can build a life with his wife and two sons. However, after there is an incident at WizTech, a powerful young wizard in need of training arrives at Justin’s door and he finds himself embracing his past to help ensure the future of the Wizard World. The pilot comes from writers and executive producers Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas. The duo were also behind Raven’s Home, another Disney Channel comedy spinoff.

The new powerful young wizard is named Billie and will be played by series lead Brown. Theiele will be playing Roman Russo, Justin’s oldest son. Gianopulos will be playing his wife, Giada.

Gary Marsh (Disney’s Descendants: The Rise of Red) and Andy Fickman (Race to Witch Mountain) will be joining Gomez, Henrie, Elinoff and Thomas as executive producers. Andy Fickman will also be directing the pilot.

The original Wizards of Waverly Place ran from 2007-2012. It followed the Russo family and the family’s three adolescent kids who had to navigate their age and also attempt to master their magical abilities. The original cast also included Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera and David DeLuise. In 2013, all of these actors (except Henrie) reunited for The Wizards Return: Alex Vs. Alex TV special.
