New LEGO Set Recreates Iconic Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Moment 40 Years Later

LEGO has released a look at a new LEGO set that recreates the moment that first appeared in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back 40 years ago when it came to theaters on May 21, 1980. This new set will be launching on August 27th exclusively on

The new LEGO Star Wars Bespin Duel set will recreate the moment where Darth Vader and Luke duel at the climax of the film. During this moment, Luke discovers who his father truly is. During this scene, he also loses a hand and falls… not quite to his doom. This is an iconic moment that is one of the most memorable in the Star Wars universe. Take a look at what this set will look like when it arrives on August 27th. recently interviewed LEGO Star Wars design director Jens Kronvold Frederiksen about the recreation of this iconic moment. Here are a few things he shared during the interview. Check out the entire interview on In the interview, Frederiksen shares about the creation process. He shared how they “typically watch the specific movie sequence over and over again. When we are using reference images, it is always original images supplied by Lucasfilm.”

He also shared that “this is more a model thought for display, so it is very important to get every little detail right. And, by the way, the storytelling. Therefore, Luke and Vader do not have their lightsabers. [Note: At this point in the film, Luke has lost his lightsaber, and Vader has turned his off.] The model reflects the moment after the lightsaber duel is over, and Vader tells Luke, “I am your father.” But, since everybody wants lightsabers with their LEGO minifigures, the lightsabers ARE included in the set. On the back of the bridge there are two small clips holding a blue and a red lightsaber.”
