Brian Culbertson and the 2012 Disneyland All-American College Band Blow Away Hollywood Backlots

DAPs Magic Disney News – by Mr. DAPs

Yesterday, the 2012 Disneyland All-American College Band, under the direction of Dr. Ron McCurdy, was led by guest clinician and Award winning R&B musician and Smooth Jazz multi-instrumentalist Brian Culbertson. Culbertson, has a long relationship with music starting piano at age of 8. He continued to excel in the world of music and by the age of 20 he had self-produced his first album Long Night Out. Now, fresh off the heals of releasing his 13th album Dreams, he stepped on to the stage of the Hollywood Backlots in Disney California Adventure with the collegiate musicians to rock the house.

The set began at 3:25. Right from the start, there was an energy in the area that was electrifying. Culbertson clearly had developed a rapport with the band. This wasn’t just a performance, but a big party. Culbertson danced around his stage as he masterfully played the keyboard and then switched to his trombone. Yes, he played trombone as well. His stage presence was beyond energetic as he bounded around the stage. This was a combination of expert musicianship and expert showmanship.

The lighting for this set was on the money as well. It became a wonderful addition to the experience and enhanced the music, instead of detracting from it.

The Disneyland All-American College Band was also on its game yesterday with Brian Culbertson. Several soloists were featured throughout the set. At one point during a saxophone solo, some of the guests were visibly moved. A couple of the songs also included vocalists made up of members of the band as well. They did a wonderful job as well.

The 3:25 jazz set for the 2012 Disneyland All-American College Band yesterday was a treat for all who attended. The music was phenomenal. The energy was unmatched. The band was terrific.
