The Little Mermaid won’t be swimming live on ABC as soon as initially thought. Originally, the live musical was supposed to be presented on October 3rd. However, ABC has pulled this program from its schedule. A new date has not been set.
“We are postponing the Little Mermaid Live special,” ABC said in a statement. “We love the idea of doing a live musical and want to make it wonderful. The project is so unique that we are making best efforts to do it next year and want to give it all the attention it deserves.”
The move to bring The Little Mermaid musical to live television continues a trend of network television doing just that. NBC started off the musical trend with The Sound of Music. Peter Pan, Grease,The Wiz, and Hairspray have also been performed live on TV.
The Little Mermaid was originally announced to be coming to ABC in May. Rob Mills, ABC’s head of alternative programming said at the time that “We really wanted to be in the game as well, and we’re Disney and we have this library that has an endless amount of classic musicals that really play to everyone.”
What do you think of ABC bringing The Little Mermaid to TV? Do you want to see it when it gets rescheduled? What other musicals would you like to see live on television? Let us know in the comments!
